Q: Can I edit the "robots.txt" file?

A: With the current Web CEO version you can both allow access to the certain files and folders and disallow it.

1. Go to the third "Robots.txt" tab of the Editor tool and browse to the folder where you store your "robots.txt" (or where you wish to save it if you haven't got one yet).

2. Select the search engine robots (spiders) you want to work with on the left pane. You can use the default list already present or edit it – just click the "Manage Spiders list" button at the bottom of the pane.

3. Change the "robots.txt" contents by selecting a spider in the left-hand list and checking boxes next to the folders and files you want to allow or disallow access to.

To save your "robots.txt" file, click "Save".

Q: Can I use Editor for working with the Dreamweaver templates?

A: Yes, you can do this with the current Web CEO version.

When you work with the templates-based pages, Editor will recognize them and offer you switching to the "Dreamweaver compatibility mode". In this mode the non-editable regions of the templates are not active in the Editor.

Q: Can I use Editor to build a Web page from scratch?

A: Web CEO Editor is assigned for quick and easy editing of existing pages, but it is not meant for building web pages from scratch. It lets you easily change the META tags, headings, alts, link text and the page content, but it does not replace your favorite web design program (Dreamweaver, FrontPage, etc.).

Q: Can I use Editor to edit dynamic pages?

A: Editor is primarily assigned to work with HTML-based pages.
However, we have been using an improved kernel for our Editor tool in the current version of Web CEO, so you can edit PHP, ASP.NET and other dynamic pages in the HTML mode, though the pages can be only partially displayed in the WYSIWYG mode.

Q: How do I select pages to edit?

A: To let Editor know what pages need to be modified, you should follow these simple steps:

1. On the first "Setup" tab press "My Site", then "Manage List". You will be given the "Page list manager" window.

2. There are two ways of selecting pages:

- click the small "folder" icon to browse to the folder where the pages are kept;

- import the list of pages: press the "Import from" button and select the option you would prefer. You can import the list of the URLs from the text file, from clipboard or from another project.

For more details, refer to the help manual inside your Web CEO program (Help > Help Topics > Part I > Step 3. Edit your Web pages for search engines).

Q: I don`t have a local copy of the site. Can I edit my pages online?

A: No, this is not possible as Editor only works with local pages.

To save your site pages from the Web, you need to have the FTP access to your hosting server. You can then use the Web CEO Uploader to download site pages to your hard drive. As soon as you save your pages locally, you can open them for editing.

If you used a content management system to build your site and therefore cannot access your files via FTP, unfortunately you will not be able to modify your pages with Editor. In this case, the only option is to edit your pages in the same user interface that you used to create them.

Q: I`m not so computer savvy and wish to edit my pages with ease. Will Editor be of help?

A: Yes, certainly. Our Editor tool was designed specifically for optimization purposes, and is very convenient if you want to adjust your pages to improve your site's positioning in search engines.

Even if you are a novice and have never edited sites before, the specialized Editor structure makes access to your Web pages easy. Each tab in Editor combines two views of the page - visual mode and HTML code, so you can alter the visual copy of a page while seeing internal code changes in the background.

Q: Can I edit or rename the sitemaps?

A: You should not edit the sitemaps and you should not rename the sitemap files when submitting them. Otherwise the search engines might not accept your sitemap.

Q: Can I exclude pages with disallowed access from the sitemap?

A: Yes you can. Go to Features > Editor > Sitemaps and click "Manage list" to add your site's pages. In the "Page list manager" choose "Import from" > "My site".

The "Ignore pages with noindex meta tags pages disallowed in Robots.txt" option is present there and checked by default.

Q: Can I generate sitemaps with Web CEO?

A: The advanced Sitemap Generator is available within the Web CEO Editor tool.

To create sitemaps for your site, select "Editor" in the Features menu, go to the "Sitemaps" tab, and follow these steps:

1. Click "Manage list" and add your site's pages: you can import the list of the URL from the text file, from clipboard, from another project, or get the list by scanning your site's Web copy.

Note: you can create the map of the entire site or its part containing the most important pages - just check the necessary pages only in the "Page list manager".

2. In the right pane, you can set parameters for every page in the sitemap separately or for several pages at once.

3. Define the sitemap format and the location of the sitemaps files at your PC: click "Options" at the bottom right corner of the program window. By default, Web CEO generates sitemaps in ".xml", ".txt" and ".html" formats. The sitemap files are saved in the "My Documents" system folder: ...\My Web CEO Projects\Sitemaps\, but you can assign them a custom location.

4. Press "Generate".

Q: Where are the sitemap files located?

A: By default Web CEO saves the sitemap files in the following system folders:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER_NAME\My Documents\My Web CEO Projects\ Sitemaps\ (Windows XP)
or
C:\users\YOUR_WINDOWS_USER_NAME\Documents\My Web CEO Projects\ Sitemaps\ (Windows Vista).

However, you can assign a custom folder for saving your sitemaps: just press the "Options" button at the bottom right of the program window, click "Browse" and define the location.

Q: Which sitemap formats are supported?

A: You can generate sitemaps in XML, TXT, ROR and HTML formats.

By default, Web CEO generates three sitemap types: XML, TXT and HTML, the ROR format can be selected additionally. If you need a single definite format only, click the "Options" button (bottom right of the program window), uncheck unnecessary variants and leave the one you need only.
